The Romanian Gem and the Bulgarian Riviera
This summer, I embarked on an unforgettable journey to three fascinating countries—Romania, Bulgaria, and Norway. My plan was to visit friends and family, immerse myself in different cultures, and relish the quality time spent with cherished companions. The adventure began in the heart of Romania, took a scenic turn to Bulgaria, and will conclude in the vibrant city of Bucharest before heading to the enchanting landscapes of Norway. In this first part of my travelogue, I’ll recount my experiences in Iasi, Romania, and my delightful road trip to the beautiful Kaliakria Resort in Bulgaria.
Discovering the Charm of Iasi, Romania

Iasi, often referred to as the cultural capital of Romania, was the first stop on my summer vacation. Known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and stunning architecture, Iasi did not disappoint. I spent my days exploring the city’s many landmarks, such as the majestic Palace of Culture, which houses four museums and is an architectural marvel. The city’s many parks and gardens, especially the Copou Park, offered a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.
One of the highlights of my stay in Iasi was visiting the Metropolitan Cathedral, an awe-inspiring edifice that stands as a testament to the city’s religious and historical significance. Strolling through the historic district, I was captivated by the blend of neoclassical and modern buildings, each telling a story of Iasi’s past and present.
My summer adventure continued in the charming city of Iasi, Romania, where I was welcomed also by a close friend who shared my enthusiasm for exploration and adventure.
One of the highlights of my time in Iasi was riding around the city on his motorcycle. There’s something exhilarating about seeing a city from the back of a bike, with the wind in your hair and the open road ahead. We zipped through the streets, past the grand architecture of the Palace of Culture, and along the scenic routes that showcase Iasi’s beautiful landscape. The freedom and thrill of riding together brought a whole new perspective to exploring the city.

Beyond the excitement of the motorcycle rides, our time together was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. We spent hours catching up at local cafes, enjoying the city’s vibrant atmosphere and indulging in traditional Romanian dishes. Whether it was exploring hidden spots around the city or simply sharing a drink at our favorite hangout, every moment was enriched by our easy camaraderie.
But what truly made my time in Iasi special was the company of my friends. We spent evenings indulging in local cuisine at charming restaurants and cafes, and our nights were filled with laughter and stories. The warmth and hospitality of my friends in Iasi made the city feel like a home away from home.
A Scenic Road Trip to Topola, Bulgaria
After the excitement in Iasi, I joined a group of the same close friends for a road trip to Topola, Bulgaria, where we stayed at the stunning Kaliakria Resort. The drive itself was an adventure, with scenic views of the Black Sea coastline adding to the excitement. Once we arrived, the resort’s cliffside location overlooking the sea took our breath away.

On the next day our initial stop at Adora Beach, located near the resort, was somewhat underwhelming. While the beach had its own charm, it was relatively small, and the water wasn’t as clean as we had hoped. Wanting to make the most of our seaside escape, we decided to explore another option.
That’s how we ended up at Bendida Beach, and it was one of the best decisions of the trip. Getting there was easy—after parking the car, a shuttle whisked us away to the beach, adding a touch of convenience and excitement to the day. Bendida Beach was everything we had hoped for and more. The soft sand, clear waters, and pristine surroundings set the perfect stage for an amazing day.

At Bendida Beach, we found plenty of activities to keep us entertained. For those seeking adventure, the beach offered thrilling jet ski rides, relaxing massages with the sea view that added a rush of adrenaline and relaxation to the day. When it was time to eat, the beach’s restaurant didn’t disappoint, serving up delicious food with a view that made every bite more enjoyable.
The day at Bendida Beach was one of the highlights of our Bulgarian adventure. It was a perfect blend of relaxation, excitement, and quality time with friends. As we made our way back to Kaliakria Resort, the memories of the sun-soaked day and the fun we had lingered in our minds, reminding us of how special this trip truly was.

Cape Kaliakra is one of Bulgaria’s most captivating natural landmarks, perched dramatically on a narrow, rocky peninsula that juts out into the Black Sea. Our visit to this breathtaking site was not only a journey into nature’s splendor but also a dive into the rich tapestry of history that has unfolded on this cliffside over centuries.
Kaliakra has been a witness to millennia of human presence, with its strategic location making it a coveted spot for various civilizations. The cape’s history dates back to antiquity, with Thracians being among the first to settle in the area. They believed the cape was a sacred place and named it “Tirizis.” Later, the Romans fortified the cape, recognizing its value as a defensive position. Walking along the ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of the past—the clattering of Roman soldiers, the chants of Thracian priests, and the whispers of medieval Bulgarians who, under the leadership of Despot Dobrotitsa, transformed the cape into a formidable stronghold during the 14th century.
One of the most poignant stories associated with Kaliakra is the legend of the 40 Bulgarian maidens. According to the tale, they tied their hair together and leapt into the sea rather than face capture by the invading Ottoman forces. As I stood on the edge of the cliff, gazing at the endless expanse of the Black Sea, the legend seemed to come alive, a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of those who once called this land home.

The natural beauty of Kaliakra, combined with its deep historical roots, made my visit an unforgettable experience. The interplay of history and nature at the cape left me with a profound sense of connection to the past, and a deep appreciation for the stories embedded in the rugged cliffs and cerulean waters of this ancient land.
In the next part of my summer adventure, I’ll share my experiences in Bucharest and my journey to the enchanting cities of Oslo and Bumunddal in Norway. There’s still so much more to tell, and I look forward to reliving these incredible memories with you. Stay tuned!
